About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Alexadner, Great point that you make here. I think too often we get frustrated with our students for not speaking clearly, but can poor examples of this ourselves. Great job in keeping the students in mind. Dr. Ryan Meers
andrea, I agree that it is important to design our instruction to meet the styles of all types of learners. The key is to be creative in how we do this. Dr. Ryan Meers
Lina, Absolutely, ask the students & they often can tell us what works best for them. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kami, Yes, not only does it help to share experiences as the instructor, but when the students share their experiences this can help the others connect the class concepts to real life too. Dr. Ryan Meers
Discussion Comment
Regina, Groups really are a great learning tool for several reasons. As you stated this allows those quieter students to feel a little more comfortable contributing. Also, this does helps students learn how to utilize groups for brainstorming & problem solving, a valuable skill in the workplace. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kami, This is definitely a challenge. I realize this isn't the "answer" but reminding your students that in their work places they don't generally have the "luxury" of picking their own teams, so this really is a picture of real life. Dr. Ryan Meers
Lina, Yes eye contact is a great way to demonstrate our respect for our students & to open up the class for discussion. Dr. Ryan Meers
Regina, It is so easy to get pulled into our notes & lesson plans. We do need to make sure that we are pulling our heads up & focusing on our students. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kami, This is hard for students to sometimes understand. However, I've found that just being fully honest & telling them that I don't have a story or example for every situation helps. I will preface with, "I've not seen this one, but here's how I think it would be..." Dr. Ryan Meers
William, I applaud your self-awareness. And I agree that looking for those opportunities for small breaks is a great idea, it really does help us keep attention. Dr. Ryan Meers
