About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

jeffrey, Yes, that immediate (or relatively soon) reflection is a key to retaining the lessons learned. I try to encourage my students to do their own type of journaling that is focused on lessons learned during the day, experience, etc. Dr. Ryan Meers
Brenda, Great point & I'm glad you're brining it out to your students: learning how to learn. This is one of the greatest gifts of a college education. Dr. Ryan Meers
Ted, I agree with you that it can be daunting. Just today I was in a meeting about teacher evaluations & I realized there is a lot of work I need to do, but where to find the time? We have to remember that this is really best for the students. Dr. Ryan Meers
Alexadner, I think the key is to get to know each of our students as individuals, which we should be doing anyway. This way we can best help them where they struggle. Dr. Ryan Meers
Warren, I agree with you about the questions. I think that's why I like using the real examples, to hear their questions & know that something has clicked in their minds about this topic. Dr. Ryan Meers

Alexadner, Yes and also it often helps those quieter students to speak out more & for the others to realize that they have good ideas to contribute. Dr. Ryan Meers

Mark, Which is more & more characteristic of most work environments today isn't it? Our students have to learn to work together. Dr. Ryan Meers
Timothy , These are all great ideas. I especially like your method at the end of the term as it really does help them get a feel for the real work environment. We don't generally get to pick our teams or work groups & we have to play the hand we're dealt. Dr. Ryan Meers
Scott, You are right, vocal variety is a very important aspect of gaining & maintaining our students' attention. I teach public speaking & it really is amazing how the change in tone, pitch, etc can regain lost attention. Dr. Ryan Meers
connie, Visuals do seem to be great tools to help students with recall, both on tests & when the information is needed in the "real world." Dr. Ryan Meers
