About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Stephen, Yes, technology, while a great help, is an ever present distraction that must be addressed. I agree that my movement & location in the classroom can help with this. Dr. Ryan Meers
Steve, Yes & for those students who are using electronic devices this can keep them "honest" & make sure that they are paying attention to the lecture & not being distracted. Dr. Ryan Meers
Therese, Yes, while we don't want to "threaten" our students or make them feel uncomfortable we also want them to know that everyone in the room will be engaged. Dr. Ryan Meers
Jesse, Great self-awareness & definitely a challenge. One suggestion would be to think about a brief story or illustration for every other ppt slide, so the students catch a breather & it will help them make better sense of the material. Dr. Ryan Meers
Abigail, Yes, vocal variety is a great tool to get attention & I like that you're using both louder & softer for this. If we are always talking loudly it's like highlighting the whole page, nothing stands out. Dr. Ryan Meers
Discussion Comment
Jason, I think this is a good distinction betwen the two. Coaching is definitely more along the lines of supporting & encouraging others in their growth & development. Dr. Ryan Meers
Coleen, Great job in seeking to help these students. And I agree that when they know how much we care, they will be more engaged themselves. Dr. Ryan Meers
Coleen, When we share real life examples, we can potentially help students identify others in the field they can turn to & possiblly help them locate another mentor. Dr. Ryan Meers
Jeff, I think this is a great idea for using examples. We talk of many of the benefits of examples, but often overlook this one. Dr. Ryan Meers
shawn, This is very true. While we want to help those students who are struggling, if they need a significant amount of help, we need to refer them to specialists in this, so they get the best help possible & we can focus on the other students. Dr. Ryan Meers
