About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Sheila, Very true. I have found that groups help the members to gain a better appreciation for others' abilities & opinions. Dr. Ryan Meers

Jeff, Yes, the truth is there are some people who simply don't like to speak in large groups. Yet this doesn't mean they do not have any good ideas & the smaller groups are a great way to draw those ideas out. Dr. Ryan Meers

Coleen, Very true that the group assignments are a great way to help those students who may be struggling to get another perspective on the content & often get a better feel. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kathy, Yes this method provides the greatest example of "real life." The only time I don't use this method is if I know their are some distinct abilities/talents that I want to make sure are spread among the groups. Dr. Ryan Meers
shawn, I agree. I think the random groups do give a much more "real life" feel to the groups as this reflects what the students will be experiencing in the work place. Dr. Ryan Meers
Elizabeth, Absolutely; the memorable examples we use are best characterized as pegs on which the students can hang the concepts they are learning. Dr. Ryan Meers
Coleen, When I was teaching history to high school students, it was always interesting & exciting to see how many of my examples/illustrations made their way back into essay responses on the exams. They do help! Dr. Ryan Meers
Sheila, Yes this is a great way to get a feel for whether our students are grasping the concepts & content of the course. Dr. Ryan Meers
shawn, Good eye contact is definitely one of the best ways to show our students that we value them & what they have to say. Dr. Ryan Meers
Coleen, Great points & I think it's important to note that we're not meaning you have to do some big song & dance routine. Simply changing your position, or sitting on a table or desk closer to students often helps. Dr. Ryan Meers
