About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Activity

Carmencita, Absolutely. And we need to remember that if we are only presenting information in one way, then these students may appear to be disengaged when it's really because our way is not working for them. Change it up! Dr. Ryan Meers
andrea, Yes, I've found that often my real life examples of mistakes I've made also helps my students learn from my mistakes. It also lets them know that it's okay to make mistakes. Dr. Ryan Meers
Stephen, I agree with you. When we demonstrate true concern & care for our students they tend to be more open about what they need from us. Dr. Ryan Meers
Steve, This is a great way to provide a safe environment for students to let you know they would like & need help. Dr. Ryan Meers
Steve, I sometimes use this method myself. As I move along I also like to create groups with a true diversity of strengths & abilities so the students can get a feel for what it's like to work in a diverse group & to use that diversity to its fullest. Dr. Ryan Meers
Stephen, I agree with you 100%. While we hope all students in a group get along & enjoy the project, the purpose is to accomplish a task & learn from it, not to have another social opportunity. Dr. Ryan Meers
Jesse, You make a huge point here that I want to reemphasize. When we decide to have group projects as part of our course work, we must make sure that we are using them because the content is best suited by them, not just to have group projects. Dr. Ryan Meers
Abigail, I wonder if you could break them in on smaller projects that wouldn't have as much impact on other students? This way you can give them some good feedback & work them into the more challenging assignments? Dr. Ryan Meers
Therese, I think you make a great point here that we need to be watching for in our classrooms. We often look at the danger of social groups, but as you said what about those students who have developed an unhealthy reliance upon another. Great job in noticing this & breaking them up. Dr. Ryan Meers
Carmencita, Definitely a challenge, yet by working as a whole group on each project you still have an opportunity for learning. This will be more like the real work environment for many of the students. Dr. Ryan Meers
