About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

helen, That's interesting as the students I have worked with who have learning disabilities have never minded about being the last to turn in a test or given more time. I always ask them privately about this & none have expressed any problems with that. If your school does not allow for this that's unfortunate as the students are the ones suffering. Dr. Ryan Meers
Rita, Have you found any strategies to help these students retain this information? Dr. Ryan Meers
Maria, I like that you provide them with the list of videos. I think the more resources we can provide to these students the better off they will be. Dr. Ryan Meers
Maria, Yes, the more clear we can be with our expectations & what needs to be done by when the better off the groups will be & potentially they will be more successful. Dr. Ryan Meers
Vickie, This is tough, however what I have done is place a significant portion of that person's grade on whether he/she shows up for class. I let the students know at the beginning that if they don't show up the day of the presentation, I really don't care how much work they've done prior, they probably will fail the project/assignment. Dr. Ryan Meers
Maria, Great self-awareness & asking students to repeat back what they think I said is a great tactic. I like to use the simple question of: What did you just hear me say & how are you feeling about that? Dr. Ryan Meers
Cheryl, You are right that this is definitely an area where we need to use caution. I have found that by offering these students other alternatives, like extra time or even being absent on test days & then coming to my office to take the test. Sometimes this can help them not feel ashamed. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kathy, Yes anytime we can work variety into our teaching all of our students benefit, but as you said especially those students who have learning challenges. Dr. Ryan Meers
Brenda, When I have students I also like to encourage them to use their creativity & often I end up getting some great ideas from them that I incorporate in future classes. Dr. Ryan Meers
Makila, Yes, often those different colors or shapes or sounds can help students recall the information better, especially on asssessments. Dr. Ryan Meers
