About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Dana, You are right that there always seem to be a few who emerge as the leaders & as the doers in each group. While I try to balance this by having the group grade each other, the truth is it's still frustrating if someone isn't pulling their weight. Dr. Ryan Meers
Rodger, Yes, eye contact is a powerful way of drawing each student into the class & as you said making him/her feel like they truly are a part of the class & does help them stay focused. Dr. Ryan Meers
andrew, Absolutely! I'm working with an individual right now (a part time teacher) who just can't seem to look anyone in the eye while he is teaching, or even in 1-1 conversation. This really is getting in the way of his effectiveness. Dr. Ryan Meers
Dana, I believe the more we can put ourselves in the students' shoes, the better we will try at making a very positive learning environment. Dr. Ryan Meers
Thomas, I like your point about keeping eye contact with students so they are ready to answer if you call upon them. While I want my students to pay attention, I'm not a big fan of surprising them & embarrassing them. Dr. Ryan Meers
Brenda, Yes & I like to revisit the list periodically throughout the lesson to demonstrate that we are covering what we said we were going to. Dr. Ryan Meers
Daisy, You make a great point as we need to emphasize the diversity that exists in groups & teams & talk about how we can use that to its fullest advantage. Dr. Ryan Meers
Donna, This is a great strategy as I'm guessing that it can also help these students retain the information & recall it for assessments. Dr. Ryan Meers
Donna, I think that we can learn a lot if we just keep our eyes & ears open & as you said engage others in our field in conversation & discussion. Dr. Ryan Meers
Jeanne, I think this is a great way for you to keep up to date on latest trends as well as helping your students learn & grow. Dr. Ryan Meers
