About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Miriam, I have heard that as well & have found it to be true in my own experience. Those memorable examples provide great points on which the facts & theories can be built. Dr. Ryan Meers
Miriam, A mobile instructor is an effective instructor, in my opinion. As you stated we can engage with our students more effectively in this way. Dr. Ryan Meers
Miriam, You are absolutely right on the importance of this skill. I would encourage you, if you can, to ask a veteran instructor who is a good presenter to observe you a couple of times & give you some feedback. I've found this to be very helpful. Dr. Ryan Meers
Miriam, Honestly this is a great strategy & to me one that is rather fail safe. If we are approaching our students from these three angles, they should be able to grasp the content well. Dr. Ryan Meers
helen, Great balance of self-directed learning & professional seminars. It is definitely a huge benefit when employers provide the funds & availability for professional development. Dr. Ryan Meers
helen, I guess then the only option would be to perhaps counsel these young people into other careers as it doesn't seem like they will be able to pass the national boards or function in the rapid pace of nursing. Dr. Ryan Meers
Vickie, This is a very difficult & challenging question. I think by kindly & gently confronting them with what you are observing & then asking them if they have struggled with these areas for a long time, you might get them to open up. Dr. Ryan Meers
andrew, You are definitely right in that students do want to hear about the real world & guest speakers are always a great idea as it helps give that taste of the real world. Dr. Ryan Meers
Jennifer, I think this is a great strategy as it gives you & the student a private moment to talk about what's getting in their way. It may be a learning challenge or it may that they don't understand this material; either way we can help them. Dr. Ryan Meers
Jennifer, I also think this is a good idea as it essentially forces each member of the group to play a role. Also, sometimes the stronger personalities take over & actually don't allow the quieter members to do anything because they need to learn to trust. Dr. Ryan Meers
