About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Miriam, So true & most of our students will be working in groups & teams for the rest of their careers so it's very important & beneficial to get them used to that work right now. Dr. Ryan Meers
Miriam, I think those progress reports can be a great tool to check on how they are doing & allow for earlier intervention. Also, in my corporate experience this is true to life as generally we had to submit status reports as we were working on projects. Dr. Ryan Meers
Timothy, Great job! I especially like your efforts to get all of the students engaged in the discussion. I think this can also be a great example to all of the students as to how they can draw out ideas from others in future work groups. Dr. Ryan Meers
Billy, This is a great idea. A couple of things here, first of all congratulations on your willingness to step into a new teaching method & try it out! Secondly, great job in providing an activity where a variety of majors/students could all utilize their talents & still accomplish the task of writing an essay. Dr. Ryan Meers
Tracy, This is a great idea for these type of settings. I have to confess that in my undergrad Chemistry class, I was definitely the one who did not understand the concepts & heavily relied on my lab partners...Great now I have guilt! Dr. Ryan Meers
Miriam, I identify with this as I have been a participant in online groups & you are right these are definitely challenging. I think a lot of it is helping our students learn how to set expectations & norms within their groups so they are better prepared to move forward. Dr. Ryan Meers
Maksuda, I agree with you. When I utilize groups, I generally have a group grade as well as an individual grade & I seek input from the group members on each other so I have a better feel for how to grade. Dr. Ryan Meers
Patricia, Real world examples help provide pegs upon which our students can hang the theories, facts, techniques, etc. And then, as you said, help them recall this information when they need it. Dr. Ryan Meers
Maksuda, You are exactly right. When we, in our Western culture, are desiring eye contact with a student, we need to make sure we understand their cultural background. Dr. Ryan Meers
Emily, This is a great example of an individual who has, it sounds like, turned a potential weakness into a huge strength. As you said, this might not work for everyone, but often these unconventional methods, when used skillfully, can greatly help. Dr. Ryan Meers
