About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Kevin, I completely agree with you. I heard a great statement about this the other day: "We don't use the people to get the work done; we use the work to get the people done." This is a leadership philosophy of development! Dr. Ryan Meers
Gary, I too am a firm believer in the preview & review approach to learning. Keep up the great work. Dr. Ryan Meers
John, Yes, yes, yes! I taught history for 4 years & said the same thing. Sadly too many history teachers only teach dates & facts & don't package them as the stories they are. But many instructors do this no matter what the course, stories are powerful. Dr. Ryan Meers
Gary, Sorry to intrude here, but so glad that the concept of "chunking" is an idea you can pursue. I'm not in culinary arts but a friend is & from what he has told me these techniques to help students retain information & be able to recall under pressure are highly valuable in the kitchen setting. Dr. Ryan Meers
Gary, That's great & what a super way to not only learn yourself & grow but get the students engaged & demonstrate that respect & value for their experiences. Dr. Ryan Meers
Maksuda, Yes, it is so important that we build a trusting & supportive relationship with all of our students early on so they will feel comfortable in coming to us with their struggles. Dr. Ryan Meers
Linda, Yes, the more we can connect our assignments to the real world & the work world, the more our students will be engaged & motivated to participate & learn. Dr. Ryan Meers
Maksuda, I think you nailed it; the key is to be tuned into our students & really pay attention to whether or not they are understanding what I am teaching. Dr. Ryan Meers

Emily, Definitely I have found this true in my experience. Especially when we are working with late teens & young adults, they often have not matured enough or had enough exposure to differing opinions. The more they can learn to listen to others & respectfully disagree the more prepared they are. Dr. Ryan Meers

Billy, That is a great example of the power of peer to peer learning. What a lesson for all of us to encourage this kind of interaction & behavior in all of our students. Dr. Ryan Meers
