About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Activity

Roy, Definitely true, eye contact is definitely not a solution to all situations nor is it a guarantee for being able to read all students, just one option among many. Dr. Ryan Meers
Alicia, That's a great strategy to keep things new & exciting in class as well as to help the students learn to work with a variety of people. Dr. Ryan Meers
Tehea, I too have found peer reviews to be a great way to evaluate the even distribution of work within the groups, especially when I can't spend a lot of time with each one. Dr. Ryan Meers
shavene, It's also helpful to have a distribution of work as this is more reflective of the actual work environment that most of our students will experience. Dr. Ryan Meers
Jacqulin, Absolutely! These experiences, whether from the instructor or other students are great opportunities for the students to connect the learning to something real & tangible. Dr. Ryan Meers
Roy, As they say the eyes are the window to the soul or mind in this case. By looking our students in the eye we can often tell if they are "with us" or not. Dr. Ryan Meers
Alicia, This is a great way to maintain their attention & to see who needs help. It especially helps with attention when they don't know where we are heading next. Dr. Ryan Meers
Tehea, Yes, an old lesson from acting is that the audience always follows the movement. So if we as the instructor can move & effectively communicate we will hold their attention much better. Dr. Ryan Meers
shavene, Yes, eye contact is a great way to show respect for others & confidence in self all at the same time. Dr. Ryan Meers
Discussion Comment
John, I like your distinction between the teaching aspect & guidance aspect. Taking that further, I would say that coaching is focused more on helping others self-discover, whereas managing is a little more directive. Dr. Ryan Meers
