About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Thomas, I think you make a great point here that hasn't been brought out as much yet. Groups are a great way to develop the skill of networking in our students. Throughout their careers they will benefit by networking with others in their field & this is a great chance to start developing that skill. Dr. Ryan Meers
Robert , Another challenge for many of us. I agree with you that if we make ourselves available at other times we can help these students while being respectful of the time of all of our students. Dr. Ryan Meers
Shantel, Thank you so much for sharing your story & also your insights on how to help ESL students especially from your first hand experience. Dr. Ryan Meers
Robert , This is definitely a challenge for all of us as instructors who utilize groups. I too have found that by popping in to the groups here & there they are much more likely to stay on topic & be working. Dr. Ryan Meers
Terrance, Yes when we engage our students with strong eye contact it lets them know we care & that we want them engaged with the subject matter as well. Dr. Ryan Meers
Sharon, You are so right. It's amazing how even before class begins if we greet our students with that smile & eye contact they are much more prepared to learn. Dr. Ryan Meers
Robert , Great self-awareness & I appreciate the transparency. You are probably right that you might need to pull back, but there are probably times when that booming voice comes in handy to get attention! Dr. Ryan Meers
Troy, you make some great points here. I agree that while these techniques provide some good ideas we, as the instructor, must analyze our individual classes & make the decisions that work the best for them. Dr. Ryan Meers
amina, And for the vast majority of us, our fields definitely do not remain stagnant or unchanging so we must be keeping up to date with our fields. Dr. Ryan Meers
