About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Laura, Those life experiences really do help with the "why" of the theory, etc. And this is vital for truly understanding concepts. Dr. Ryan Meers
Timothy, I too find that stating what we are going to cover & the objectives for the session at the beginning & then revisiting them at the end is very helpful to all of our students. Dr. Ryan Meers
Miriam, This is a good strategy & definitely helpful when the student doesn't get frustrated. I think sometimes this can be helped/avoided if we make sure that we don't get frustrated either. Dr. Ryan Meers
Miriam, Yes, I highly recommend that if we feel one of our students is struggling to talk to former instructors & see what may have worked in the past. Dr. Ryan Meers
Discussion Comment
Mahnaz, I have seen this same thing many times. When the students really experience brainstorming & appreciating the diversity of opinions it seems the light bulb really comes on for them. Dr. Ryan Meers
Richard, A good point is made here: do we have a good reason for working in groups? Sometimes we use group work just because we should, but if we have a good reason & that is demonstrated to the students I've found they are usually more motivated to work. Dr. Ryan Meers
Richard, I think one of the most valuable lessons learned from groups is that others have different ways of approaching problems, issues, etc. Dr. Ryan Meers
John, I think your post reflects the importance of we instructors doing our jobs of monitoring & also understanding the nuances of communication so we can read these situations properly. Dr. Ryan Meers
David, Absolutely, using the technique of familiarity is a great teaching method that really does help our students with the less familiar concepts. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kimberly, Exactly right, or they will remember what the textbook stated better because they have your story to connect the ideas to. Dr. Ryan Meers
