About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Alan, I think this is a great strategy. As I read that, it allows students to succeed in the content area, yet they are still accountable for writing skills. Dr. Ryan Meers
CHARLENE, I think you've hit on a key point here. Finding ways to help these students be successful in different ways without just making it easy. You've given some examples of that very thing; the students still did the work, just in a little different way. Dr. Ryan Meers
Ron, unfortunately we sometimes encounter these situations where we have such a limited time there is little we can do. In these situations perhaps helping the student identify & come to grips with his own struggles was helpful. Dr. Ryan Meers
mark, there are definitely generational differences that must be taken into account in every classroom. I've found if I keep after it, even the younger students will do better with eye contact & responsiveness. Dr. Ryan Meers
Laura, So glad you picked up these ideas & also that you view lectures this way. I sometimes ask them to repeat back to me what they heard & this helps identify the gaps, they may actually understand more than they think, I just need to point that out. Dr. Ryan Meers
Jim, This is always a challenge. A couple of things that I try to do to get the questions flowing. I'll ask what questions they have. This is a small difference, but sometimes it makes it more comfortable to ask questions as I am acknowledging that they have questions & I want them to ask them. Other times I'll have a couple common questions that have been asked or that I would ask & I'll throw them out to prime the pump for questions. Dr. Ryan Meers
johna, Great ideas. And I think it's important to remember to maintain good eye contact when the students are relating an experience or asking a question. This signals to all that we think their ideas are as important as ours. Dr. Ryan Meers
Alan, I agree with you on the value of this process. One of the benefits is that you are also approaching learning from a variety of learning styles, rather than just 1 or 2. Dr. Ryan Meers
Alan, These are all great communication skills & definitely ones that we all need to work on to be truly effective communicators. Dr. Ryan Meers
Emma, Eye contact is defnitely a powerful way to engage our students, especially in larger classes or where I can't move around as much. I can still engage them with my eyes. Dr. Ryan Meers
