About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Activity

Sandra, this really is a great idea as the peer to peer instruction often is more valuable for some students than hearing the instruction from us. Also, this can be a great help to the stronger students as they will be learning the content even better. Dr. Ryan Meers
Mary, yes, this is a very frustration situation. I think you are doing all you can do at this point; being available & reminding them of the available resources. Dr. Ryan Meers
Elizabeth , the visual & hands-on aspects are great ways to help all learners be successful in the classroom. Dr. Ryan Meers
Sandra, this is a great technique & you are right on when you state that it helps to learn from everyone's experiences. These situations can even be used to analyze as mini-case studies & determine if course of treatment was right, etc. Dr. Ryan Meers
Beth, I really like the idea of having the students use the term in a sentence. This greatly aids in understanding context & usage of the word. Dr. Ryan Meers
Margarita , these can be great tools to help those students who are struggling. The important thing to remember is to still challenge them & not sacrifice content. Dr. Ryan Meers
Elizabeth , I try to have very objective grading criteria for the groups & the subjective part of the grade is based on the individual contributions. I make a judgement on this & also ask the fellow group members to assign a grade (per a rubric) for each group member. Then the students can see the group total & their final grade based on their contribution. Dr. Ryan Meers
Phil, this is a very unfortunate situation that all of us can learn from. Instructors must be aware of these students & the effect they have on the rest of the group & their grades. To me it is a lack of professionalism to allow this behavior to happen or at least continue & impact grades once it is brought to the attention of the instructor. Dr. Ryan Meers
Beth, this is a great technique to help keep you at the right pace. If you are comfortable, I would also ask a couple of the students who are professional enough to handle it to monitor you & let you know if they feel you are going too fast. Dr. Ryan Meers
Margarita , this is quite a challenge for those of us who don't have the best poker faces! The smiling probably is not the problem; when you feel you are getting upset, I would encourage you to quickly do an analysis & think about what is making you so upset. This helps you get to the root of the problem (rather than hitting on peripherals) & also refocuses your brain so you aren't thinking about the anger but trying to solve a problem. Dr. Ryan Meers
