Because of the lack of social cues and body language, replacing negative words with positive words can be crucial; in addition, acknowledging the student's concern by checking in and checking out is just as important in online communication. 

Ok, so I am not the most social media enthusiast, however, I have always appreciated video conferences rather than email exchanges.

The benefit of having the freedom and flexibility to take classes or turn in assignments online can provide busy students with a platform that can allow some individuals academic opportunities where the traditional format would not be feasible.  While with other individuals, this format may require a higher degree of commitment and discipline compared to a traditional classroom.

Comment on Scott Larson's post: I concur that currently most of my grad students are all over regarding their level of academic aptitude.  It is tough when using a rubric where one student clearly meets all of the objectives while other students fall significantly short of academic expectations.  I simply try to encourage the lower students that by the end of their journey, they can look forward to being at the level of expectations, but currently, I will look forward to their growth.  

How do the color charts help international students who have ESL when asking certain questions during the introduction to best describe themselves?

Comment on SETH SORONNADI's post: One of the ways we set a sense of community is by having students comment on the works of others in their cohort.  Over time they learn to trust their cohort and recognize the journey an online program can create a sense of family with individuals that may be 1000s of miles away.

I always felt that to be an effective leader, you must first know thy self.  Understanding what motivates you does not necessarily equate to what would motivate others.  In addition, understanding your weaknesses can help mitigate future stressors. 

Comment on Mary Ann Cirone's post: I agree that understanding the difference in personality traits can help us identify different learning methods that will help guide and shape different students more effectively.  Some may respond to honey and idealistic, whereas, others need to understand the rules and comply. 

It is essential as an instructor to be aware of the work demands the course work may entail to avoid attrition.  Providing bite size work loads and slowly increasing the work demand can be an effective way to increase confidence in the learners.
