I found it interesting that asynchronous is found to be more informative than synchronous. Whereas, synchronous should be in small groups no more then 6 participants for no more then 30 minutes.
Sharing a brief bio is an easy and effective way of providing a professional connection between learner and faculty. Having a brief bio submitted from the learner can also add key insights as to what may better motivate them.
Simply put, be familiar with the software before you begin.
I have used Rubrics in the past and find that they are extremely helpful, especially when a student will contest a grade.
Big take away: use expressive writing to create better communication because of the lack of social cues missing in online learning classes.
Having a grading rubric provides a simplified and justified value when grading and providing feedback.
Communication with online students: investigate all tools available, set strict guidelines regarding messaging (email, group discussions, etc) about when to check and when not available.
