Indeed, Francis. The technology does not guarantee the process but the instructional design and intentional use of both technology for delivery and mediation does as well as the clear and relevant intervention of the instructor.
Good points, Francis. Particularly note that inputs and outputs can be either static or dynamic in the sense that they can either be predetermined (by the teacher or instructional design) or emergent from the learning process (the ideal).
Great points. Tracy. The immediacy of the technology has revolutionized teaching and learning forever...and the potential to maximize student responsibility for the learning process.
Hi Francis, Yes, the self-paced and self-selected characteristics of this kind of approach are critical and also mean that the F2F or real time online meetings can be more about working together than passively listening.
Yes, the sense of mobility is very much behind this title for today's learners It also means mobility in how learning communities are set up and sustained, which is more difficult for teachers to really grasp and integrate into their teaching methods.

Very true, Francis. The Internet has truly revolutionized how we teach and learn, except that many teachers have still to really maximize the potential of the technology with their students.

Yes good points, Thomas. I agree that conventional classrooms were and are not necessarily ineffective, just not as effective as technology-rich mediated environments of learning. The reason I say this is because the demands are different as you mentioned in one of your previous posts. We, therefore, as instructors must address those demands and not simply teach as we were taught even if we quite liked it. I actually attended high level research institutions both in the UK and Canada and while I am honored to have listened to some excellent minds, I would not describe an of the instructional… >>>

Excellent points, Thomas. Indeed the process of teaching and learning is dynamic and as such does not end with the immediate confines of whatever course we happen to be teaching. It is more important that students learn how to learn and how to continue to learn - new technology does add even more pressure with constant changes and developments.

Hi Patricia, Yes both online and in-class interactive white boards can increase the levels of student engagement incredibly and can also provide opportunity for "capture and distribute" so that teaching moments are not lost. I do agree that most teachers do not maximize the potential of this technology when teaching.

Good points, Patricia. I agree that there is so much flexibility with the Internet that more people may have the opportunity to learn. The challenge, however, is with institutions and study programs to make learning more accessible and not cause unnecessary barriers with older methods of organization and delivery.
