Have any of you ever dealt with sexism toward you in the classroom? I have had several issues over the past several years and resolved them appropriately. I have never heard it talked about. I could have missed it I know. But I wonder if male instructors experience it from women and how does everyone deal with it. The students were not beligerent but just condescending and crossed the line a little.

@nicktorrance : many people think that sexism and racism is something in the past. It is very real. Just because some choose not to face it does not make it unreal.

@rbrumley01 : I live in the deep South and racism is alive and well down here. I see it every day.

@JillJ : That is a good way to put it, mature students. I find that younger students feel more comfortable contacting the mature student to ask questions too.

@rwhittaker : I see that too. I think it is something we should address in our training because interaction with the opposite sex is part of our everyday lives. I think as professionals, we should explore it and learn how to respond accordingly. Thank you for your comment,

Do you ever find sexism from male or female students? I have had a few male students in the past few years that were not beligerent but were condescending in emails or discussion boards. I handled it appropriately. This is a subject I have never seen discussed. I wonder if the male instructors experience the same from female students?

I believe this with all people. You get what you expect from people. I believe when we set the bar high, students will respond.

I obtained my degrees late in life. I started at 44 with an associate degree, I was hooked. I continued on and obtained my bachelor of science. I went right on into a master's program. I worked full time during all of this. I have said all of this to say this: it is never too late. You are never too old.

One of the things I enjoy the most about teachingĀ are my more aged students. The excitement they bring to discussions is contagious. I encourage everyone to use these students as a resource. MostĀ are usually at every chat. They… >>>
