Sexism

Do you ever find sexism from male or female students? I have had a few male students in the past few years that were not beligerent but were condescending in emails or discussion boards. I handled it appropriately. This is a subject I have never seen discussed. I wonder if the male instructors experience the same from female students?

I do encounter sexism in my classes. More often it is women with preconceived, demeaning ideals about men. I am not a supporter of discrimination os any type, but am not well versed in how to intervene or even support a nonsexist viewpoint.

@rwhittaker : I see that too. I think it is something we should address in our training because interaction with the opposite sex is part of our everyday lives. I think as professionals, we should explore it and learn how to respond accordingly. Thank you for your comment,

I haven't personally encountered sexism in my classes but more on racism where a student once emailed a colleague insinuating that "since I wasn't born in this country, I have NO good command of the english language..." when I gave her a low score on a paper rigged with spelling and grammatical errors.

@rbrumley01 : I live in the deep South and racism is alive and well down here. I see it every day.

I grew up in the south and racism is a very big deal, something that I have personally have experienced. So I try to be mindful of everyone I might come in contact with no matter what their sex might be.

@nicktorrance : many people think that sexism and racism is something in the past. It is very real. Just because some choose not to face it does not make it unreal.
