The ability to communicate effectively through on line connections is important in the changing world and requires more than computer literacy.  For example, I am able to use the computer along with different programs like excel, ppt, word, microsoft office, email, etc. but lack the skills to be perceived as kind and thoughtful.  I often come across as too serious, matter of fact, etc.  I personally prefer face to face communication because there is so much to be gained from body language.  But that's just me.  I didn't really learn anything in this module that I didn't already know and… >>>

In the medical world where things change at a rapid pace,  a passion for life long learning  is necessary.

Working in teams is important for the students to learn cooperative problem solving.  Instructors need to give guidance and support to students, use positive feedback and make any negative feedback constructive so the student can learn from the experience.

While writing has it's challenges, in particularly AI, it is a learning tool to help the student succeed.  I currently assign group activities where the students work together in assigned or self selected groups to solve a problem and then report back to the rest of the class.  I provide large easel size post-its and colorful markers.  I will continue to engage my students through group learning activities.

Group activities such as brain storming can enhance creativity which leads to critical thinking.

I will start using the [emotional] strategies and the ARCS communication moving forward.

Text communication is missing the body language component of expressive language and can be misunderstood as cold, demeaning, etc. if the right words are not chosen carefully.  Using video to post a technological message, introduction, lesson allows for the non-verbal body language and decreases the incidence of miscommunication.

Creating a positive social presence is a very important role for the on line instructor.

Learners today are not all young people fresh out of high school.  Many learners take on line courses so they can do their course work around their schedules with family, work, and other commitments.

On line learners have to be able to ask for help when they need it.  The instructor needs to encourage the students to reach out as needed.

Comment on Vicki Hoppe's post: Being available to answer questions is very important to the students.

The most important and relevant thing I learned with this module is the difference between Customer Service and the having a professional supportive relationship with the students.
