Activity

I use low risk active learning like brainstorming questions after a short lecture or a case study. Creating small case studies and having students try and problem solve helps them gain knowledge of the concepts and think like a nurse.

I learned that being organized and overprepared for class will help us as educators not only gain confidence but will also help us grow as knowledge experts.  Stop thinking negatively and focus on the content.  Creating guided notes will also help your students be organized themselves and cover all the important areas they need to learn.

I handle a disruptive student carefully.  I calm myself down and breathe.  Then I say, let's have a one on one so we do not interrupt the whole class and the lesson.  Once I meet with the student, I ask the student what their concerns are and to be honest with me.  I usually get a whole different side of them and story too.  I watch my communication and make it an open one and make sure the student has trust and I mention their privacy will be respected and implemented.

I will be using the "use it widely" card, it will give students a chance to add their critical thinking on their questions and will get them to not ask as much "what's on the test" type of question.  Those are questions they can easily investigate in Calendar or syllabus.  I will also ask for student observers and switch roles from center stage to shy students.

From the beginning, I will be clear about expectations and late assignments.  I need to improve on deadline reminders.  I also have to remind them of the golden rule of real life and that there are no excuses for late or missed work.  The students are going to be future nurses and there is no such thing as providing half the care to a patient or not providing any care due to caring for another patient.  Thanks for these modules, very helpful.
