Here's a calendar with quirky celebrations on it that can be used to spark student conversation.  I love that the first day of the Nutrition class I am teaching is Cheese Lover's Day! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/

Reply to Denise Byerley, R.N.'s post: Thanks! I always forget about group assignments.  I will definitely have to incorporate some of those!

Reply to Rocklan Kopylec Sr's post: Great suggestions! Thanks!

Reply to Robert Cool's post:That made me laugh! The instructor that is mentoring me said that no matter how much you think you don't know, you were hired because you know more than the students, and you have it in you to teach them that knowledge.  That seemed to really help ease my jitters!

Hello! I am brand new, and will be teaching my first solo class starting with Term 1 (next week). I have some ideas of how to keep the class moving, but from those of you who are more seasoned, what are some of your favorite things to do? Videos? Question and Answer Sessions? Games? Just curious and would love some additional ideas! Thanks!

On the first day of class, I plan to ask what their most and least favorite classes have been up to now.  i think that will give me a good sense about their learning style: hands-on vs. lecture.
