Is the student learning with the "buddy and apathete" as you describe? It may just be the way the student learns best...not that I agree with him not adapting to other styles of learning. If however the student is not learning or performing well all around then the other instructors should be spoken to so that maybe all of you can come up with a solution.

For me it means simply being able to take your knowledge and apply it. Memorization is not critical thinking, taking what you have memorized and using it is critical thinking.

Agreed. Part of what makes instructor's at a career college so invaluable is that for most of us we are still working in the field so we can bring real world experience to the students daily.

I agree that technology has completely changed the way students are being taught and learning. That being said my biggest concern is the preparation that our teachers (and students) are receiving. I have seen new software and hardware being delivered to schools without any guidance so that teachers and students have to spend time that should be spent on learning the material learning to use the new learning tools. Before we all jump on the technological bandwagon adn start filling our classrooms with the newest gadgets and programs we need to make sure that our instructors and students are fully… >>>

Thank you for your post. I feel reassured since I am fairly new as an instructor, still hold the title teaching assistant, and feel that I will never learn everything I need to know. Quite reassuring to know I never will but neither will anybody else!

A little ironic being that the class is about writing efficient Lesson Plans.

What specifically did you find was not applicable?

I know that I need to pick and choose what I can apply in my teaching environment so it may just be that they have to write their lesson plans for a wide audience. I don't know that they can preassess who their students will be to prepare adquately.

Just my opinion...

I agree with you Richard. Granted it took me 10 years and a complete change in industries to be happy with what I am doing but people and things change. I know that when I made the decision to change I told myself I had to be completely sure and while you can't be 100% I went for it and am very happy now.

Maybe younger students are still unsure, are being pushed into making a choice, or like I did consider a career college a choice for those who aren't good enough for a 4 year university. Don't get… >>>

I like the idea of a close ended question first. It can build up the student's confidence to speak up in class and then you can draw them in and help them explore the concept(s) with open-ended questions. Sometimes a broad question to start can intimidate some students. Stating the facts or particulars of a subject can help students gather their thoughts and then apply the concepts better. I will try that next time.

I like the idea of grouping students of different age groups. I know I have learned a great deal from interacting in my personal and professional life withe people of different age groups. If we can expose our students to this in the classroom then they can apply it in their own lives and learn from it.

Great observation and certainly something for all of us to consider.

Hands on exercises. Role playing. Guest speakers. Anything that gives them more than the in-class sit-down and listen technique seems to help cement the validity of the information.
