I like the idea of a close ended question first. It can build up the student's confidence to speak up in class and then you can draw them in and help them explore the concept(s) with open-ended questions. Sometimes a broad question to start can intimidate some students. Stating the facts or particulars of a subject can help students gather their thoughts and then apply the concepts better. I will try that next time.
