I try to teach my students to channel the stress they feel from school into positive outcomes.

Students who speak more than one language may be processing differently as they translate from their native tongue into English.   If an assignment is to be completed in English, encourage the multi-language speaking students to actually do it in English rather than in their native tongue and then translating it to English.

Race is a social construct.  Culture refers to the differences in people's backgrounds.  Try to be as inclusive as possible.

It is important to look at your students from a wholistic approach.  Gender identity, race, socioeconomic background, and other factors can affect how the student will approach the program and cariculum.  Never make generalized assumptions.  Try to plan your lessons to include each student and their different learning styles.  Use "on the spot" learning moments to have students identify exclusionary language or actions.

Evaluate the different types of students present in your class so that you can adequately manage them.  Keep good records.  Have a good organized filing system for student assignments and grades.

Synchronous discussion works best with only one student to answer specific questions for them.  If you are having a discussion with many students, asynchronous chat works best.

You must assert your presence in an online classroom.  Let students know that you are present and available for questions and discussions.  Present students with a headshot and biography.  Ask for a short biography from each student so that you can better understand their personal learning style and objectives.

Modules are a great learning format.  I need to familiarize myself with how the online program works so that I am ready to assist the students.

Be sure to teach to all different types of learning styles to adequately address the needs of your students.  Adult attention span usually drops off after 18 minutes so keep lessons organized to 15 minute mini- lectures.  Have students implement new knowledge immediately to make then retain it better and understand the real world application better.

I learned about making a positive first impression.  Arrive early and fully prepared and greet each student as they enter the classroom.  Learn student's names (correct pronunciation and nicknames) quickly.
