Kasarah Swart-Kaushal

About me

Kasarah Kaushal has always focused on improving the socioeconomic well-being of others through volunteering, internships, and employment. She graduated from Siena College in 2014 with a BA in Economics and minor in Business, and has volunteered to help underserved and impoverished communities in the US, Jamaica, India, and England.

While working for the community non-profit BronxWorks, she helped secure financial resources for those at risk of homelessness through public and private funding. At Citibank, Kasarah provided products and services to meet both explicit and unperceived financial needs of those in the local community. As the University’s Student Success Manager she supports a diverse, international student body in their online learning experience.

Kasarah has a passion to serve others, is detail-oriented and investigative by nature, and is always looking for ways to improve day-to-day operations. She enjoys having a good time with friends and family playing games like Monopoly and Pinochle and warns others not to cheat; she's extremely competitive and has been known to consult rule books when challenged.

Activity

One of the main things that I learned in this module was that we must have an organizational culture that does not include negativity and is driven by positive and uplifting thoughts about our students and their abilities to succeed, as well as the long term goals of the organization. We must all come together, in all departments, with the same vision and shared goals - quality, excellence, and success. One of the biggest takeaways from this lesson was the concept of helping students succeed inspite of what is going on with them in their personal life. Considering the fact that students come to us with limiting beliefs about their abilities to do well in school as well as other stressors and personal problems that we may be unaware of, we must learn to understand them on a deeper level and create connections that with help to feel comfortable, believe in themselves, and thrive in their studies. I have learned that having an EduPreneurial Spirit means I believe I am part educator and part entrepreneur at the same time. Therefore we all work together for the organization but also for the student at the same time. Not only do we want our students to succeed and earn their degree but over time our business will continue to prosper in ways that go beyond the basics of our individual role. The concept of an "Intelligent Heart" was also quite intriguing. In fact, the importance of learning to recognize, accept, and help our students transform some of their negative emotions is something that may truly benefit those who are struggling. It's easy to see the complaints or frustrated students as a problem, but when we take the time to see them for more than the situation they are presenting and the emotions they are experiencing we can serve them better.
