Dave, You may want to work with the Chairs to help them develop some structured questions that require the applicant to discuss what he or she has already done rather than what he or she might do. Behavior-based interview questions often start with "Tell me about a time when you ...."
Annette, Holding educational sessions related to the positions you are seeking is an interesting approach to identifying candidates. Thanks for sharing that with us.
Suzanne, Thank you for sharing this perspective. Behavior-based interviewing is very effective. Determining how an individual performed in a situation previously is usually the best way to predict how that individual will perform in that situation again.
Suzanne, You make good points here. There is so much to learn when one first joins an established faculty. We developed an online faculty orientation course to help new instructors understand our history and culture and learn the policies under which our academic team operates.
Susan, Good points! Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Cissi, Thank you for these comments. Hiring folks who fit the culture and personality at the campus is vital to success. I look forward to your posts in the other discussion areas.
Billy, You've identified one of the toughest things we have to deal with as Deans, faculty quitting during the quarter. It is really important to develop a "bench" of qualified faculty you can call in to fill in for a while.
Dave, Technology has really change the way we fill teaching vacancies on our campuses. Do you see an challenges wit hthis type of process that may not have exited when all we had was the "old mthod?"
Billy, Thank you for the post. How can you determine if a candidate is a subject metter expert, especially if the position you need to fill is outside of your area of subject matter expertise?
Susan, Thanks for this post. Advisory Boards and faculty referrals are among the best methods of identifying candidates for teaching positions. How do you approach Advisory Board members when you are looking for teachers?
