Brian, What are some of the 12 areas? Many of the other coursetakers may be interested in this information.
This is a very good strategy, Vincent. Too often, teachers do not keep is close enough contact with their students. regular feedback is vital.
Thank you, Vincent. Time management is an important skill that not many faculty members help students develop. Often I see students wanting to take an online course becasue they feel it will be easier. During advising, I ask them to tell me when they are going to set aside the six to eight hours each week they will need to be successful in the course. Sometimes I find out that they really had no idea what they were signing up for.
Thanks, John. Building rapport sets the stage for a great learning environment. How do you get your students "jazzed" about the subject each day?
Which HABEs are you referencing?
Peter, It is great that you are an active instructor in lab. Too often, I have seen instructors turn the students loose then only interact with students when they have questions. You take the initiative, which is what is supposed to happen in lab. Does your school ever observe teachers performing in a laboratory environment? My faculty members developed an observation instrument exclusively for use for observing instruction in a lab setting.
Thank you, Peter. What are some of the specific things you do and say to encourage your students?
Huong, Thank you for your post. What do you do to check on student mastery of the course objectives other than give tests or quizzes?
Thank you, Peter. Who conducts your classroom observations? How often are they conducted? What are some of the specific things the observer looks for?
Jason, The positive energy is a good thing to build in your classes. Implementing a variety of effective teaching methods is another. Convincing the students that are responsible for what happens to them and that they can do this by "catching them doing some correctly" and praising them for it builds the self-efficacy that students need one they leave us.
