Thanks, Hermie. How do you prevent making these "assumptions" that do not work out?

Thank you, Randi. It is not uncommonn for students to come to us with certain "I cannot do this" attitudes about something that has not gone welll for them in school in the past. From time to time, I have also had students talk about how the "inability" runs in their family. These can be tough expectations to overcome. The most common one I heard when I was a Dean was that "I cannot do math." I usually told the students who shared this that we had great math teachers who will find what works for them. Randi, Thank you for sharing this. Your campus is fortunate to have a President that goes out of his way to interact with the faculty. That is not the case at all career colleges, though it often is in the good ones.
David, Students definitely need to learn to do things independently. However, sometimes it takes some students longer to get to that point. It is important not to allow students to become too frustrated. A good technique to get students on track is to ask leading questions so that they can find the answers themselves, with just a little help.
Good point, Jeff! Students can tell pretty quickly when a faculty member is not prepared. Many colleges insist on detailed written lesson plans for each class meeting. This is a good practice.

Thanks, Anna. Knowing your students is a big key to success. How do you get students to share the little details of their lives with you?
Thanks, Billy. We need to be role models for our students. What are some specific things you model that you want them to internalize?
Thanks, Julia. I encourage all my faculty members to require students to contact them and to send students who miss materials to help them stay caught up.

Thank you, Julia. Often we choose to allow someone to be our mentor more for how they do things than for what they do. What personality traits have you mentors had in common?
Thanks for sharing this, Dave.
