About me

Please allow me this opportunity to welcome everyone to The Lounge! As someone who has had the honor of being in career education and corporate training for thirty years (gee, it makes me feel much older!), I can honestly say that I am the happiest professionally when having the opportunity to interact with fellow career educators - whether it be a training event, webinar, or medium such as this where we can collaboratively share our thoughts.

Brenda, Thanks Brenda, we have actually encouraged individual campus departments to craft their own mission statements in concert with, and support of, the institution's corporate mission statement - sort of each areas contribution to the whole. I am curious as to what course participants think about this approach? Jay Hollowell
Thanks Holly, True, and when a student feels unimportant, and trust waivers, it is so difficult to regain... Jay Hollowell
Thanks Amy, for your observations, Of all the potential consequences from not addressing student complaints and concerns in a timely fashion, perhaps the one with the most long-term effect is the break of trust with students and their resulting hesitation about the institution, the sector and their own educational and career goals. When that happens, and when students don't continue their training, we undermine our own existence as a value-added educational choice. Jay Hollowell

Tina, Recent research shows that specific and appropriate praise and recognition are still simply the key motivators to employee performance and success. And so often overlooked. Thanks for your thoughts! Jay Hollowell
Jenifer, True, all of these things often work together to make it extremely difficult for the adult student. I think that lack of support from one's family or current employer, in order for a student to accomplish a career goal or dream, is perhaps one of the greatest hindrances. As educators, our ability to support and appropriately motivate each student is crucial. That being said, part of that message includes ensuring that the student is fully aware of the demands of the program and ensuing professional position. Thanks Jenifer! Jay Hollowell

Kyle, Thanks, this gets to the core - funding an education correctly and appropriately in concert with expected outcomes. Jay Hollowell

Sandra, Excellent point! I would certainly want to know my return-on-investment. And when program costs, industry information and expectations/skills for interested job positions are all fully disclosed, the ROI is much more clear and positive! Thanks! Jay Hollowell

Thanks Jenifer, You are so right, I am still mostly a phone and face-to-face individual, however, I have to admit the ease in utilizing so many of the current technologies for effective communication. From a compliance perspective, I think the key is that regardless of the form of communication, the "rules" still apply. Thanks for your comments! Jay Hollowell
Amy, Thanks, this is by far one of the most important points. Students often have a perception of the career they are exploring that may be very different from the realities and demands of the position. Part of assisting students in making informed decisions about their education is to ensure they are, in fact, informed about the characteristics and requirements of their chosen fields. This must be done right from the beginning of their educational pursuit. Jay Hollowell
