I use both styles. The new students, I use extrinsic motivation to keep them on their goals and tasks until it becomes its own reward for them. I will give them recognition verbally or take the class on a field trip if they meet all the goals. Then, the later students, I tend to use more intrinsic motivators that they have developed to keep them pushing toward bigger goals or more satisfying goals. 

I will use more validating and security centered language when having class discussions. I basically utilize the security tactic because it was what I needed as a student was security and confidence in myself and what I learned.

Autonomy is a little difficult because of the material being covered and time allowed. I kind of plan out the day, but I do let them decide how they get the review (online quizzes, online game, oral questions etc...). I've also let them decide when lecture is (like what hour). Depending on the course, I also let them tell me the order… >>>
