About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

James, Good tie to the working world. Students sometimes forget that they are their own "brand" that is they have to sell themselves and their abilities to an employer. Through effort and skill they can set themselves apart from others but they can only do this through hard work and maximum effort. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sandra, Since we are dealing with adults and in many cases older adults coming back to school with many life experiences we need to show them respect as they share their opinions and life experiences. They have much to add to the course plus it demonstrates to them that they are valued as learners. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Barbara, Good point about the ups and downs of our courses and the impact they have on us and our students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Rhina, We need to bring enthusiasm and passion to our teaching. As you say our students will observe and benefit from how we approach the classroom. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Amanda, Great story, thanks for sharing it with us. You are making a difference in the lives of your students as evidenced by their school attendance. Keep up the good work. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Lakithia, So true and well put. We are the connecting link for many students between success and dropping out of school. Plus, by displaying the human factor you are providing support to your students in ways that are beyond measurement on a short term basis. Gary Dr. Gary Meers

I make it a practice to meet and greet each student has he/she enters the class. Even though we only chat a few seconds the process of earning their respect has… >>>

Carrie, Concrete feedback is important to students. Your comments reflect their feelings as you high lighted the use of more quizzes and direct feedback. The more you can reinforce their success the more they will make the effort to be successful. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Nestor, Edutainment is a part of being an effective communicator and instructor. Thanks for sharing this perspective with us. I know it will be of help to other instructors looking for ways to engage their students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Teresa, Students like a routine in terms of course functions but like variety and change of pace when it comes to content delivery. Your approach is offering such strategies to your students and will serve to increase their engagement. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
