About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

David, Good point and well said. They have to know your policies are going to be enforced on a consistent basis. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Baneet, Good way to keep your finger on the pulse of the class. This way you can determine what progress they are making in acquiring the content. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
David, Good way to ease them into the class and let them get settled into the course. The first class is always a bit nerve racking for students if they don't know the instructor as they want to see how they are going to fit into the course. Once they know they have a dedicated and supportive instructor they start to calm down. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Joyce, Blending the two helps you to comply with your college's syllabus requirement while you are personalizing the course with your addendum. A win win for everyone. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
David, Thanks for sharing this information with us. Examples like this are really helpful to other instructors that are just getting started in our profession. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
David, Thank you for sharing this example with us. You are right about what happens when goals and objectives are not customized to the current group of students. Goals and objectives can remain the same from class session to class session but they need to be adapted based upon the experiences of the current students, their classroom behavior, and examples that are available. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
William, I have found this to be true in may teaching as well. I have to incorporate relevancy and application for maximum retention of content. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Baneet, Student management is essential if you are going to maintain control of the class. So follow the strategies you have laid out to make sure you are the educational leader. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sandra, Showing them the the progress they have made and didn't realize is a good motivator. They get involved in the functions of the course and overlook the knowledge they have acquired and skills they have developed. These reminders are eye openers for them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Monica, Good example of how to build a curriculum that is customized to the different learning preferences of the students. You have a plan that targets learning in a variety of ways and that will keep the students engaged. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
