About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Clyde, Application and relevancy are very important in the learning process. Your second sentence captures what it is all about. Show them the connections between class content and their careers. This is when they really start to get excitement about what they are learning. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Doug, Like your excitement and dedication to teaching. Bringing passion to the classroom helps "sell" the content you are going to deliver that day and in the days that follow. In addition, you are being a role model for your profession so the students get to see what a professional looks and acts like. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Marilyn, I like your professional development plan for your new teachers. You are giving them numerous opportunities to acquire instructional strategies that will benefit them in their classrooms. As we both know it is a building process to get an instructor to the point they are effective and efficient in their teaching. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Douglas, I am starting a new class tomorrow night and will be using this format. I really enjoy the information I get from my students for the reasons you list. I can't wait to see what this new group of students are going to be like. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Paul, Good advice for all instructors, especially new instructors. This is an important part of student engagement. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Joe, By being prepared and have variety planned into your delivery you can approach the classroom with a much higher level of confidence which is appreciated by students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Anthony, This information needs to be clear and concise right from the beginning. You are doing this with your approach and as a result you have something to build off of throughout the rest of the course. They know your expectations and policies and that you are going to be consistent in enforcing them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
DeOnn, As you know students like real life experiences and stories that help them see relevance to what they are learning. So the more you can give content and then support it with examples or case studies the greater the engagement is going to be. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Andrea, Sounds like a great way to start a course off. I know you are going to enjoy the results of this approach as well as an increased development of rapport with your students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Colleen, Good way to get students engaged in the learning process. You are helping them to see they have a future if they are willing to put forth the effort. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
