About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Frances, I always enjoyed having instructors with passion for their field. You are bringing such to your classroom. Enthusiasm is catching as you know and the more you bring it the more your students will catch it. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Frances, I agree big time. You are a graphic example of non-traditional success. You can model what it takes to be successful in your field while encouraging students that feel they can't do it or have been out of school too long. Keep up your efforts they are impacting the lives of so many students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Brendon, Good comments about how you can learn from listening to your students and the input they are giving. I like your approach of customizing your instruction based upon what you learn from the students. This way you are offering customized instruction to your current class of students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Gino, Good strategy for involving all of the students in the class. You are bringing discussion and interaction into the course in a way that is comfortable for everyone. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michelle, I agree and I find that having an open mind for learning is a fun part of being a teacher. No matter how many times I have taught a course I learn a lot of new things each time I teach it. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Clyde, Well said. This is what effective and efficient instruction should be about. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Suzanne, Graphic organizers really help in this area, don't they? The students can see how the different segments fit together to complete the big picture of learning. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Andrew, You are "connecting the dots" for the students. By you showing them real world applications you are making the course content relevant in their minds. They see an ROI to all of their efforts. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michelle, Good supports to help students to get settled into your course and feeling that they can be successful. When fear is present there is a feeling that one should flee the situation and this is why so many students quit at the beginning of the class. We need to get them comfortable and settled into the course so they start feeling that they can be successful if they are willing to put forth the effort. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
John, I like this. The syllabus is the cornerstone of the communication between you and your students. You and they will be referring to it throughout the course when questions come up about assignments and course requirements. As a result it need to be accurate, concise and clear.
