About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Gayle, The more information you have the more you will be able to target and customize your instructional delivery. This enhances the learning process. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Patricia, This is a good overview of how to have a progressive professional development plan. Constant improvement equates with growth of expertise and skill. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Toni, Right you are in terms of talking and walking the talk and walk. This sets the stage for the development of respect between the students and instructor. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
James, Good points about the value of using graphic organizers. They really help students to see the key concepts and how those concepts fit within the learning structure. Gives them a graphic road map to follow. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Nancy, Students love stories don't they. Stories from the field and how you worked through different situations help the students to see the value of the content you are giving them. Makes their course relevant to their career goals. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Ron, I use this method a lot in my classes with very good results. I think you will like the outcome of using this strategy. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Nancy, Approach them privately before or after class is one way. Another is to have students write their questions on 3X5 cards and hand them in. This way you can answer their questions and they don't have to speak out loud in the class. I use a lot of small group (3-4 students) in classes. In the smaller venues they open up and share which helps them build their confidence in becoming more effective in their communication in a large group setting. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Adelia, You make a key point about encouragement and praise. They have to be earned and then they are valued. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Chad, Effective questioning is a valuable learning strategy. Use of stories and examples help students to see the human aspects of development in their own careers. They learn you have the real life experiences to bring effective and relevant content into the class and share with them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Norrisjean, Good advice for instructors. They need to include this type of planning in their delivery efforts. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
