About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Sharyn, Good advice for instructors to follow. We need to be organized and confident in our ability to engage our students in the learning process each time the class meets. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Marty, Good advice for all instructors. We need to bring our very best to the classroom each and every time we meet with our students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Frederick, Yes, they do. They help the students to stay focused on what is critical information for them to acquire. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michelle, Application enhances relevancy. By giving them exposure to content and then having them apply that content you are making the connection for them between their course work and their career goals. They can see how they will be able to achieve their career goals if they are willing to put forth the effort required to acquire the knowledge and skills needed in the field. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Victor, You raise a very valid concern. The strategy for this is to provide sufficient variety in your instruction so as you progress through the course you are appealing to the different learning preferences of your students. This way each student will have a portion of the course being offered within their preferred area of learning. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Edward, Sounds like you have a very good approach to your instruction. With the short time frame in which you teach a course you have to be very effective and efficient in your delivery which you are doing. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michelle, Yes, it will. This way the students can internalize the new content in a way that enables them to store and retrieve that content later on when it is needed. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Mark, Good point about rewards. No matter the age students like rewards for doing something well. Also, you are doing a good job of connecting the content with the real world through your examples and lab work. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Terry, I hear you about them getting sleepy toward the end of class. I teach from 4 until 10 pm so I am challenged with this in every class. Getting them moving and applying their knowledge in a lab is a good way to capture their attention and focus. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Mark, Students really like to hear about your career experiences. You are bringing to them stories and problems that you have worked through and this makes the content you are sharing with them that much more valuable. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
