About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Phil, Yes the do. They are very helpful in setting the tone for the course that is to come. Everyone gets settled in and comfortable so they can look forward to learning. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michelle, They are so helpful to students because of what you said. They can see how parts contribute to the whole when the information is placed on a graphic organizer. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jan, People with like kinds of intelligences or personalities tend to select the same family of career areas. Knowing this can really help instructors as they select the delivery methods they are going to use. They can customize more by having this information available. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Steven, I think all of us educators have a class segment like this. I try my best as you are but in the end it is their choice to be successful or fail. I support them the best I can. I get my satisfaction from my other students who are going to take the course content and move forward toward their career goal. I refuse to let the non-engaged segment take away my joy and excitement about teaching. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Mazen, I admire students that come to school and are successful even when they are challenged with disruptive situations outside of the classroom. They want to learn and are willing to do what ever it takes to stay in school and learn the content and skills needed for their career selection. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Rick, This is a very effective way of expanding student engagement. This way your students know you are seeking their input and they in turn feel comfortable asking questions about things they do not understand. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
James, Good strategy. Thanks for sharing it with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Rick, I use student introductions for many of the reasons you listed. It gives me and the students a bit of knowledge about the life experiences that each student is bringing to the class. This information gives me a base from which I can build my instructional planning. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Susan, Can you put them into groups and do case studies? I teach from 4 until 10 pm so I understand what you are experiencing. I change the flow and pace of the class frequently and get them moving to different locations in the room. Little things like this help to wake them up and get their attention back on learning. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
William, Right you are about the sharing of real life examples. This way the students can see how the effort you and they are putting into their career preparation is worth it. Learning about how a graduate was hired because he/she had a great portfolio makes it real for them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
