About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Alan, The connection between the individual and his/her professional preparation is powerful. By getting them to talk about themselves you helped them get settled into the course and then start to focus on learning the content. Good model to follow. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Elaine, Yes, respect is two way and it must be earned in both directions. When mutual respect is earned then the foundation has been set for the development of rapport and this leads to more engagement on the part of students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Paul, Examples like this help to reinforce the content of courses. The more samples and examples that are brought in the more connection students make to what they are learning. Good strategy to follow. Thanks for sharing it with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Dr. Kevin, Thank you for this good discussion about the balance we need to find in our instructional delivery. You are right on with your statements about how we need to adapt and customize our instruction on a regular basis if we are to remain on target with our students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
David, So true. Each class has a unique personality based upon the student dynamics that it contains. Adjustments have to be made to keep the students on target and moving forward with their learning. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Tawnya, Spoken like a true learning leader. You are managing the setting in a way that enables your students to self discover, make applications and see relevancy. This is what teaching is all about. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Emily, Passion about one's field is a valuable tool to use with students. I don't care if they make fun of me at times about how excited I am about the content I teach because even if they think I am over the top at times they are thinking about the course and what I am sharing with them, plus they know I will help them learn what they need to know. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Emily, Good comments about the need to "read" the class dynamics and then plan around them. This way all students are going to have the opportunity to be a part of the class and receive the needed instruction. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Peggy, Great to hear! I know you are going to have fun using these techniques and your students are going to benefit from your efforts. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Scott, I agree with the need for variety because as you say in the real world we all encounter different situations where we need to be able to process content in different ways. The more expertise we have in doing this the more successful we are going to be. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
