About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Misty, Good advice for instructors to share with their students. The more success students have the greater their confidence in their ability to be successful will be. It is at times like this their motivation really takes off. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Mathias, Good strategy for engaging students that might not volunteer when setting. By bringing them up front to help they are not in the spotlight but are helping in a supportive way. This helps to build their confidence and status in the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Yolanda, Good point. Students like to see how they can personalize the content to enhance their career progress. The more they see how this can be done the higher their motivation level will be. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Alan, Your last sentence sums up a positive first class impression very well. This is what we should be doing during the first class meeting because then we can build on this impression as the class progresses. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Dr. Kevin, Thank you for this insight about the first day impressions that students form. As you say by having positive first impressions students then look forward to upcoming classes. Their motivation increases as a result of what is said and done the first day. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Susan, You are so right about setting the tone and environment for the class during the first meeting. How this is done determines how the next few classes are going to proceed in terms of student engagement. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Batrice, Yes you do. It is much easier as we all know to build on a positive first day rather than trying to dig out of a negative first one. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Batrice, Having current equipment in sufficient amounts for all students is essential. To have less is unfair to the students and their education. Good point. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Richard, Thanks for sharing your experiences about teaching that you have acquired over the past 16 months. Your input will be of help to beginning instructors. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Susan, So true and so important if the students are going to retain the needed concepts and core knowledge required for career success. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
