About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Lawrence, Field trips are valuable teaching tools. I use them a lot in my classes for the reasons you state. They serve to validate the content I am teaching my students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Rosa, Enthusiasm is catching just as is dullness. We need to bring our A game into the classroom/lab each time we teach. We owe that to our students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sue, I commend you for making your course entertaining, informative and exciting with your different instructional methods. I am sure your students really appreciate your efforts on their behalf to help them learn the essential content while making progress toward their career goals. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Roger, This programing approach is common in many schools, so I can appreciate your comments about how it is very difficult to get a clear picture of what the needs of students are. By offering a variety of instructional delivery methods you will be able to meet the needs of the students at different times throughout the course while keeping your instruction exciting. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Catherine, Like the way you set out your expectations. This way you reduce student confusion and increase their understanding of how the course is going to operate. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Kelly Jo, Thank you for sharing this name recall strategy with us. This will be very helpful to other instructors. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Catherine, Good way to find balance for all of the different personalities you have in a class. Variety in instructional delivery helps to keep the students engaged. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Russell, I think this is a good approach since you are showing the students their accomplishments in sequence. This growth really helps to keep them engaged. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michael, I think this would be a good strategy to follow. Once they have the basics down you can move them into the field conditions so they have a realistic picture of where they will be working upon graduation. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Kimberly, I would highly recommend that you revisit the goals and objectives midway through the course for two reasons. One, students forget quickly so they need the reminder of why they are taking the course and how it fits into their career development and two, how much progress they have made in a few short weeks. They sometimes get so focused on being successful in the course they forget they are really learning a lot so this mid-course reminder helps them to see the progress they have made.
