About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Tammie, I have found the same in my teaching. This is a good thought to consider in planning your instructional delivery. It is fun to be a teacher when you have students that are seeking more and are eager to learn. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Tara, Good point. We need to be clear and concise when we share the expectations of our courses. This way the students can see the big picture of what is going to come. You are right humans don't like surprises when it comes to performance based efforts like classes. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Rekha, Students really like case studies and scenarios. I like the way you are thinking about how to plan for your classes while seeking ways to engage the students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Melissa, You have outlined a comprehensive and developmental professional development plan for yourself. I think these items will enable you to retain your personality and instructional style while gaining a clear understanding of how you want to conduct your classes and the behaviors you expect from your students. Keep up the good work. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sarah, You make a number of very good points about how to motivate and encourage students. Your last sentence really puts it all together. A personal and private conversation can do so much to excite students about their futures as well as help to direct their behavior in the classroom. They know they have the support of someone that wants them to succeed. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Kaley, Good point and one we need to remember each time we step into the classroom or lab. We are role models for our students and our actions need to reflect such. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
David, Good strategy for your students. You are providing them with great support with this method. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sameena, The students need the graphic connection between content and application. Diagrams and charts help to make that connection. Good strategy to follow. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
David, Good point and very important for effective instruction. Students need to hear and observe examples of application and relevancy in terms of the course content. The more you can do this the greater the content retention is going to be. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Lawrence, Students like to hear stories about the career experiences that their instructors have had. Helps to make the content relevant to them. I commend you for being able to stand a top a 300' tower, I am shaky on my 30' ext. ladder. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
