About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Roger, Money does talk. Knowing they have such earning potential is a good motivator for students that start to question the value of what they are being taught. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michael, I use former students in my classes for the reason you state. They really help to motivate and inspire the current students to stay in school and be successful in the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Lawrence, You have touched upon a critical element in instructional planning. You need to "read" the student population you have and then plan according to their life experiences, learning preferences and support needs. Good points, thanks for sharing them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michael, This is a nice way to blend engagement and focus into the course. This makes for a supportive and comfortable class as well. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Tiffany, This is something that I do as well. I give a one page handout reinforcing what is in the syllabus in terms of expectations. This way they have a concise and clear set of information that should direct them throughout the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Tanya, Student brains need variety and change of pace to remain engaged. Your approach is working in their different learning preferences as well as giving them different focus points throughout each class. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Tiffany, Very true. We should never step into the classroom/lab without adequate preparation. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Kimberly, This is a very well thought out professional development plan. I commend you for how you are going to expand both your knowledge and expertise as a professional educator. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Maryellen, I use former students myself for the reasons you state. They help to make the course content real for the current students. They also help to motivate the students because the current students can see themselves in that career as a result of the former students sharing their experiences. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
James, The term "drifting" comes to mind when you don't have goals and objectives. You and your students just wonder around the material with no defined outcomes. Good points, thanks for sharing them with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
