About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Sandra, Having a pre-vet animal science degree I know what you are talking about. Graphic organizers are one of the main reasons I was able remember all of the different animals and their classifications. They work! Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Donna, I wish you much success in your teaching! You have a great attitude about how to expand your instructional expertise and bring creativity into the classroom. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sandra, Good for you. Students need a change of pace and variety in learning if they are going to stay engaged throughout the class. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Gabriel, Simple sequential learning growth is a powerful motivator. From your comments sounds like this is the approach you are using in your teaching. Keep up the good work. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Aprilan, The idea of telling students that they are doing well in the course as well as where they need to work harder is a good one. Our culture is based upon telling people what they are doing wrong rather than giving encouragement. Keep up the good effort in this area. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Kelly, You are doing a good job of being aware of how you want to engage the students. By working on a continual basis in the area of classroom/student management you are going to keep your students focused and the class moving forward. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Eugene, So important. The more you can help the students to use their newly acquired knowledge and skills the higher the cognitive retention rate of material is going to be. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Heather, Like the way you teach! You are having fun, engaging the students and keeping the class on track. This is what good instruction should be. Keep up the good work. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Gabriel, Good points about how to support the learning of your students. Little things like being early to class and chatting with students really help with establishing rapport and earning their respect. These are solid foundation items for engaged and focused students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Heather, Yes, I do agree. For older students the fear of non-success can be a powerful motivator since they are current students as a result of some life experiences, such as no employment or needed career expansion. The younger students aren't as driven in terms of this type of motivation but once they get a taste of what life is really like they start to realize quickly that college is personal choice not an entitlement so it is up to them.
