About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Nancy, I like your passion and enthusiasm for your subject area. I use case studies a lot in my teaching as well for the reasons you cite. They really help to keep the students engaged. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Keli, You have to be the role model of your field for these students and the example you give illustrates that fact. So we need to make sure we do a check before we work with our students to make sure we are reflecting the highest standards of your profession. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
SHIVA, They need to understand your high standards are reflective of the field so you are doing them a service by setting your standards high in the course. If they are successful in the course then they will be well prepared when they enter the field. Sometimes this is hard for them to grasp but keep reinforcing the reasons why you are doing what you are doing and they will get it. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
SHIVA, This is so important if you are going to develop rapport with students. Good point, thanks for sharing it with us. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jesse, I call this "connecting the dots" for the students. This way they can see the value of the course content and how they are being helped to move forward in their career development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sandra, Your last sentence really outlines the value of providing reinforcement and how it contributes to student success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sandra, This is so important and so true in relation to learner success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
William, Courtesy, respect and rapport are three essential components of successful teaching. They help students to become engaged in the learning process for the duration of the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kyle, Congratulations for a job well done. You are helping all of your students, even the more withdrawn ones to feel comfortable in your class. As a result you are getting contributions to the class from everyone. This benefits every learner in the room. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sandra, Right you are about the human factor and how it impacts student retention. Having an instructor that cares about their success and is supportive of their efforts is so valuable for students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
