About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

William, I like this ice breaker. It is a new approach that is fun as well as informative for the students. Thanks for sharing it with us. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Teresa, Good way to introduce the "human factor" as their instructor. You are showing them you care about their success and this results in their working to increase their engagement. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jennifer, Good for you and your approach. You are "selling" an area that may not be seen as being excited but due to your passion and excitement it is seen as being valuable and possibly a career choice. This is such a compliment to your effort and professionalism. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Leigh, This is such a great service to and for your students. This way they get to learn in their different learning preferences at different times in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jean, I use graduates as guest speakers in my classes for the reasons you list. They help to make my content valid and real for my students. They reinforce the ROI of being in class and learning the content. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jean, Thank you for these good comments about how to find your balance in instructional planning and delivery. The failures can be just as successful as the successes if they are seen as learning opportunities. I know when I try something new in terms of an activity I never know if it will be successful. This is part of what makes teaching fun as well as challenging. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sandra, This is a comprehensive approach to supporting your students and getting them settled into the course. Having available referral sources that you can use is so valuable to the students because they know they can come to you for support and assistance as needed. This makes you a learning leader and model for them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Philip, Good point about being excited about your content. It is for sure that if you aren't they won't be either. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kelly, By making it "real" to the students you are increasing the ROI for them even if they don't get it at first. The real life examples support the content and the students increase their learning. This is a win win for everyone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Justine, You have to own the classroom and by moving around and being animated you are doing so. Keep up the good work. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
