About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Deb, Great to hear how you are connecting the various memory concepts to your instruction. The more connections we can make between the course content and student life experiences the greater the content retention there will be. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Leslie, Your point is a good one because often times students seem to forget they are bringing extensive life experiences to the classroom and they can use these experiences to connect with the content being studied. When they see how they can make such applications they become engaged and focused on their learning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Paul, Good strategy and one that will assist students in defining and then refining their problem solving skills. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Paul, Good point and something we need to work on with our students. Reflective thinking needs to be a part of our skill set as educators and we need to share this process with our students so they can make it a part of their operating format. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Paul, Good discussion on how individuals need to develop a personal system of organizing and using their cognitive processing. Discipline in the critical thinking arena is means developing a personal system of steps to follow to solve problems and see big picture solutions. Individuals need to develop this form of self discipline because many of today's careers are based upon problem solving and solution seeking. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, This is how I use guided notes as well. Many of my students do not have good study skills so the guided notes help them to identify the key points and then locate the supporting concepts under these points. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, You make a very good point. If we don't get buy in from students then our content loses value. They need to see how what we are offering is moving one step closer to their career field and goals. When they do they become motivated about their futures. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Patricia, Being creative is one of the fun parts of being an educator because we get to come up with new and different ways of helping our students learn. These creative activities help us to stay interested and thus not become bored with teaching the same classes over and over again. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, I am sure because your field is tactile in base. Coming from the construction technology field my students learn best through visuals and hands on as well. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Patricia, Good analysis for how to approach the classroom and delivery content to your students. Common sense and your years of experience in the field serve you well as you continue your instructional efforts. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
