About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Bryce, Many learners need that extra reinforcer in terms of information that is being shared. The use of graphic organizers helps the students to see the big picture of the topic being discussed and then how the smaller segments fit together. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jenni, Good plan and yes, they can write in the provided space. I use guided notes in this way because during our lecture time I know the students have the key topics because I have listed them and underneath each topic I have given them 3-5 lines on which they write the relative ideas as we discuss them. At the end of the class they have a good set of notes and I have helped them to develop better note taking skills. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bryce, Students need to see the ROI of what they are buying and that is a quality education that will enable them to enter into and be successful in their chosen career area. So your point is well taken. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bryce, Learning can be fun if it is structured in such a way that the students can see the value of what they are learning and are given opportunities to apply their new knowledge. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lisa, I think it is the "Student Bermuda Triangle" of hearing. The SBT is where all instructor given information goes never to be heard from again because just as soon as you say it there is a question about what you have just said. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Travis, This is how a learning leader should conduct the class so all students have equal opportunities to learn. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Travis, This is a good way to illustrate the application and relevancy of the content you are sharing with your students. They see you doing the tasks and then they can try them as well. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Leslie, Not only are you showing them graphically what you are teaching you are also giving them note taking skills since they are mimicking your drawings in their notes. You are providing them with a couple of very valuable resources. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Leslie, Good point about relevance for students to see and understand. Students can become so focused on the content area they forget how much other training and knowledge they will use when they are out in the field. Your example reinforces that and I am sure this student will appreciate your comments once she is using MS Word while working in a medical office. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bryce, There is a saying that goes your comments and it is one that I have enjoyed for years as a life long learner. The saying is "To Teach is to Learn Twice". I really agree with this. I get to work and share content from my field with the next generation of learners and I get paid besides. This is a win win as far as I am concerned. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
