About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Joseph, Variety of delivery and change of pace in the class are both ways to engage students. You are offering different learning activities to your students so they can use their own learning preferences to gain the content of the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Andrea, Helping them to make the connection between their future career in nursing and what they are being taught now is a powerful motivator. This connection increases the value of their education to them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jeremiah, Good strategy to follow. Helping them to think is much more valuable than just solving the problem for them. In the work world they are going to have to solve problems so starting as students gives them a head start. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sandy, It seems that many students do not want to think. They just want to take courses, get credit and graduate to high paying jobs. Unfortunately in the real world for them that is not how it works. Being able to think and problem solve are valued skills that will return rewards for many years to come. Hopefully we can get some of them to see the value of working through the steps to refine their thinking abilities. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Alicia, I think you have shared a very good and workable definition of intelligence. Thank you. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, This is such an important part of the instructional process. I think it starts with respect then goes to rapport and then trust over a period of time in a course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Alicia, Our students are going to need to be able to this in their career area. We all problem solve in one way or another so the more skill we have in proposing solutions the more successful we will be in our careers. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sheldon, You make a good point about sorting through information in order to come up with possible solutions. This is important for students to be able to do. If not they will spend their time chasing resources and not come up with solutions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Martha, Passion for one's field and enthusiasm for teaching about it are two critical elements needed by instructors. You are showing your students you love your work and that you are willing to help them enter it if they are willing to put forth the needed effort. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, I think this is a great message to send to the students. That should really motivate them to think that they have a skill set that enables them to earn a living even before completing the course. If that doesn't excite them nothing will. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
